Material estimator

Tile Calculator

Calculate floor or wall tile count, boxes, waste, grout-adjusted coverage, and estimated material cost.

Reviewed for formula logic and buying assumptions on May 21, 2026.

How This Calculator Works

Tile ordering depends on the room area, tile size, grout joints, layout waste, and box quantity. This calculator converts those details into tiles and boxes.

Formula

Tile count = project area / tile area, adjusted for grout spacing and waste, then rounded up.

Assumptions

The calculator estimates field tile. Borders, accent strips, stairs, breakage from difficult cuts, and dye-lot matching may require extra material.

Measurement Checklist

Practical Examples

  1. A 120 sq ft room using 12 in by 24 in tiles with 10% waste needs about 66 tiles. If there are 8 tiles per box, buy 9 boxes.
  2. A 5 ft by 8 ft bathroom floor using 12 inch by 12 inch tile with 10% waste needs about 44 tiles, or 5 boxes if there are 10 tiles per box.
  3. An 18 ft by 1.5 ft backsplash using 3 inch by 12 inch subway tile with 15% waste needs roughly 125 field tiles before trim pieces.
  4. A 90 sq ft shower wall field using 12 inch by 24 inch tile with 15% waste needs about 52 tiles before niches, edges, or accent bands.

Before You Buy

Buying Guidance

  • Buy all tile from the same dye lot when possible; matching later can be difficult.
  • This estimates field tile only. Trim pieces, bullnose, accent strips, spacers, mortar, grout, and sealer are separate.
  • For wall tile, calculate each wall field separately when niches, windows, or accent bands change the layout.

Waste Rules

  • Use about 10% waste for simple grid layouts, 15% for diagonal layouts, and more for borders, niches, stairs, or fragile materials.
  • Large-format tile can need extra material because bad cuts and broken corners waste more area per piece.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not assume grout spacing eliminates the need for waste. Cuts, breakage, and layout centering still drive overage.
  • Do not wait to buy replacement tile after installation; dye lots and calibers may not match later.

Common Questions

How much waste should tile have?

Use about 10% for simple layouts, 15% for diagonal layouts, and more for complex patterns or many cuts.

Does grout spacing affect tile count?

Yes, though usually slightly. This calculator adds grout spacing to each tile dimension for a practical coverage estimate.

Should I buy extra tile?

Yes. Extra tile protects against breakage, bad cuts, and future repair needs after a dye lot is discontinued.
