Flooring Calculator

Estimate flooring square footage, waste, box count, and material cost for laminate, vinyl, engineered wood, and hardwood.

How This Calculator Works

Flooring is purchased in boxes, not perfect square-foot slices. This calculator turns room area into a box count with a waste factor and optional box price.

Formula

Boxes needed = area with waste / square feet per box, rounded up.

Assumptions

Straight-lay floors often use 5-10% waste. Diagonal layouts, plank staggering, closets, and complicated cuts can push waste higher.

Measurement Checklist

Practical Examples

  1. A 15 ft by 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste and 23.5 sq ft per box, buy 9 boxes.
  2. A 12 ft by 12 ft bedroom with 10% waste needs 158.4 sq ft. If each box covers 20.1 sq ft, buy 8 boxes.
  3. A 900 sq ft level with 10% waste and 24 sq ft per box needs 42 boxes before transitions, underlayment, or stair material.
  4. A 6 ft by 8 ft closet with 15% waste and 22 sq ft per box still needs 3 boxes because flooring is purchased in whole cartons.

Before You Buy

Buying Guidance

  • Box counts matter more than exact square footage because stores sell whole boxes, not loose planks.
  • Check the coverage printed on the box you are buying; different colors or plank sizes in the same product line can have different coverage.
  • Keep one unopened box if the color, dye lot, or locking profile might be discontinued.

Waste Rules

  • Use 5-10% waste for simple straight layouts and 12-15% for diagonal rooms, closets, stairs, or heavy cuts.
  • Use the same waste factor across rooms only when the layout direction and cut complexity are similar.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not forget closets, pantry floors, and flooring under movable appliances if the same material continues through those areas.
  • Do not buy from mixed lots unless variation is acceptable; matching later can be harder than buying one extra box now.

Common Questions

What waste factor should I use?

Use 5-10% for simple straight layouts and 12-15% for diagonal, patterned, or cut-heavy layouts.

Should I round boxes up?

Yes. Flooring boxes are purchased whole, and keeping one extra box can help with future repairs.

Does this include underlayment?

No. Underlayment, transitions, trim, adhesive, and tools are separate.
