Flooring Waste Factor Guide
Flooring waste is not padding for bad math. It covers cuts, layout direction, pattern matching, damaged pieces, closets, and the reality that flooring is sold in whole boxes.
Reviewed for estimating assumptions on May 21, 2026.
Simple rooms
Use 5-10% waste for square or rectangular rooms with straight plank or tile layouts. The lower end fits simple rooms with few cuts; the higher end is safer when closets or small transitions are included.
Cut-heavy layouts
Use 12-15% or more for diagonal layouts, herringbone, patterned tile, stairs, many doorways, closets, or rooms that are noticeably out of square. Complex layouts waste larger offcuts and leave fewer pieces reusable.
Why one extra box can matter
Keeping one unopened matching box can solve future repairs after a color, dye lot, locking profile, or tile caliber disappears. Returning an extra box is usually easier than matching a discontinued product later.
