Bagged Mulch vs Bulk Mulch

Mulch is easy to compare incorrectly because bags are usually sold in cubic feet while bulk mulch is quoted in cubic yards. Converting both to the same unit is the only fair comparison.

Convert bags to yards

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. If a bag contains 2 cubic feet, about 13.5 bags equal one cubic yard before rounding. If the bag is 1.5 cubic feet, it takes 18 bags to equal one cubic yard.

When bags are better

Bags are convenient for small beds, narrow side yards, apartments, staged work, or projects where a bulk pile would sit in the driveway too long. Bags also keep the material contained until spreading.

When bulk is better

Bulk mulch usually wins on larger beds when delivery access is good and the material can be spread soon after it arrives. Bulk ordering also avoids opening and disposing of dozens of plastic bags.
